I came across my old movie review website material and thought I would post it here. There are hundreds of movies I need to add since the last time this was updated but If you are wanting to find something to rent/download I think there should be plenty to choose from here.
Ranking system:
I have devised a system of five Astericks. The ratings are as follows:
*****= A classic. Don’t question it. Embrace this movie! You may not "like" this film, but you will appreciate the art, creativity, and genius in the way it was produced and executed. Few films ever achieve this rating, so if you find a movie with five Astericks buy it on the spot.
****= Simply a great film. One you will thoroughly enjoy. This film is excellent and lacks only a certain je ne sais quoi in comparrison to the five asterick films, but also unlike the five asterick films this movie is generally entertaining to wider audiences. This film will win your heart and you will always remember it fondly. Therefore buy or rent it on the spot.
***= This film is charming. It may not be as deep or as moving as the higher ranked films, but it leaves you wanting more. Sometime cheesey, or perhaps too sappy, but beware this film could become one of your top twenty favorites! You should rent this film straight away.
**= Perhaps not the best film you’ve ever seen but its original and entertaining. It may be too Hollywood-or overdone but if you can get past this (which I wouldn’t blame you if you couldn’t) then you just might find it enjoyable. There is a big distinction between two astericks and three so beware!!!
*= Do not under any circumstances see this film- okay that’s way to harsh (actually no it isn’t). This film is either contrived, lacks a decent plot, has poor acting/writing/directing etc. It is painful to watch this movie with a critical eye. Perhaps if you watch it while you’re asleep you may enjoy it. (Just beware of osmosis). Its sad that this movie exists and takes rental space away from a good movie.
A Christmas Story (Comedy at its best) **** Children's Holiday Movie
This tale of a young boy’s quest for a red rider b-b gun is an all time classic. If it’s not already this will become one of your favorites. After watching it the simple mention of the pink bunny suit, the neighbor’s dogs, the leg lamp and a toy dirigible you’ll be in stitches. A true classic any time of year.
A Mighty Wind (Not as funny as Best in Show but hilarious none the less) *** Mockumentary
"Oh, I love zee model train. I mean vithout dee model train they would never haff made the big train." This is just one of many quotable moments from this really funny movie. From the makers of Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show and This is Spinal Tap. With the usual crew of misfits. If you like any of the aforementioned films you should really see this film.
A Nightmare before Christmas (Tim Burton at his best) *** Claymation Children's Movie
This movie is spectacular! A claymation wonderfest. O.K. claymation is too cheesey of a word to use to desrcibe the artistry of this very unusual and highly innovative film. The characters is so original and quirky you'll be reminded of Edward Scissorhands or movies of the like. A movie about everyone's desire to fit in (well sort of), a treat for the whole family. See it.
A Perfect Murder (Sleek and stylish) *** Thriller
Starring Micheal Douglas and Gweneth Paltrow, this film based off of the orignal Afred Hitchcock classic. Suspensful and stylish this film is a delight to get caught up into. Set in posh New York locals- the look of the film is exquisite. It will keep you guessing to the end. A fun and pretty ride.
Afterlife (Beautiful Japanese film) ***** Foreign Film Drama
The best Japanese movie I’ve ever seen! It is so heart felt and original. The manner in which this very original story is brilliantly told. It is a film which you will feel a deep connection to given its serenity and simply beauty. You will have a hard time finding this film- but if you do- you treat yourself to a spectacular movie.
AI (What was Spielberg thinking??) * Sci/Fi
This was the last project Stanley Kubrick was working on before his death- following his departure Steven Spielberg finished the film. This movie is an utter disater. Although totally in line with the types of movies Spielberg has been making in recent years. There is nothing inventive in this futuristic tale of a puppetmaster. If you want to be entertained look elsewhere.
Amelie (Foreign film of the Century) ***** Foreign Film Drama
Typical French film: "Woe is us we are French and suffer from eternal lack of happiness" Amelie will have you saying: "I’ve never been this happy in a theatre before in my whole life!!" Whether it be the garden knome, the zoro photomart placards or the hypocomdriac cigarette counter worker you will fall in love with this movie- if you do not something is wrong with you and you should seek mental health treatment (ironically I can help you out with that) immediately. This is a great love story-but really much much more than that- its a story of imagination and true creativity which inspires the heart. Buy it. Love it!
American Beauty (Most over rated movie of the last 20 years) * Drama
This movie was contrived. The writer(s) asked themselves "How do I want the viewer to react/feel to/about this scene?" and proceeded to write the film from beginning to end in this manner. Wether its the ridiculous paper bag flying up in the wind captured on video tape, or the over zealous portrayals of sedate housewives/husbands by Annette Benning and Kevin Spacey. The movie oozes fake/falsity to me. A movie which shows how our society values the wrong things is done much better and in a much more entertaining fashion- is fight club. I was shocked that so many people loved this movie- It’s so over the top hollywood- it’s not the "artistic representation of what our society has become" any more than it is good. See something else please! If you think you liked this movie-all I can say is: "re-evaluate".
Back to the Future Trilogy (Goofy but great in that 80’s kind of way) *** Drama-edy
Yes they are dated, yes. But they still hold up to the enjoyable movie category. Michael J. Fox plays as lovable as any of his typical characters are and Marty Mcfly is certainly no exception. For heavens sakes its classic when he asks for a "Tab" and the waited comes back with: "Well, you have to order something first." Marty proceed to ask for a "Pepsi Free" and the waiter said "No, you’re going to have to pay for that son." or when they thought he was wearing a life jacket when he was wearing his puffy 80’s vest. Classic- simply classic. Ignore the continuous ZZ-top references and enjoy. Rent all three in one night and have a marathon!
Best In Show (Realism can be funny) *** Mockumentary
This remarkabley smart movie is actually a mock-u-mentary about a group of dog owners who raise show dogs. The film follows each of the various owners for the days heading up to and following a major kennel club show dog championship. By the makers of This Is Spinal Tap and Waiting for Guffman, this comedic masterpiece is truly understated. And as my cousin pointed out, (Between the guy who literally has two left feet, to the soup loving gold diggher) one doesn’t know wether they should laugh or feel pity for these misfits. In the end though you will laugh and laugh a lot! Rent it.
Big Fish (Overall not too bad-but not good enough).** Drama
I am not quite sure what has happened to Tim Burton, the director of A Nightmare before Christmas. He has made so many bad movies over the past few years I thought I'd given up hope. Then I see the trailer for this movie- and thought- perhaps-just perhaps he has regained some of his original magic. And alas he has- but not enough of it to make you really like this film. Yes, certain scene are memorable and enjoyable but it's simply not enough. The performances of Albert Finney as the ailing father and Jessica Lange as the devoted mother are spectacular and make the movie worth seeing.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s (Audrey Hepburn, what more could you want?) **** Drama
This is an elegant and classic gem. Dated? For sure- but in a way that is so retro it will always be in. Audrey Hepburn stars as a single cosmopolitan girl whose turmultuous friendship with neighbor George Pepard become much more. Ms. Hepburn is so endearing you will cry everytime you hear the song Moon River from here on out. It’s a great film to watch on a rainy night. Romantic and lovely. See it.
Bottle Rocket (A poetic comedy) ***** Drama-edy
This is the first of three movies made so far by Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson. It is a very simple story of three goones and their attempt to find their dreams (or at least what they think should be their dreams). The characters are all loveable even when they are being completely morronic. Its a gem of a movie. While few people have even heard of it this film is one of my all time favorites. Its simplicty is its beauty. Love DIGNAN and Bob Maplethorpe. Watch it and adore it.
Charlies Angel’s I or II (Silly- Action packed fun) *** Action
If you loved the original series- which I did - then this light hearted take off of the Aaron Spelling classic is right up your alley. Bill Murray as Bosely- what more dare I say. Except that the combo of Luci Lu, Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore would be very hard to beat. The action packed second film is the first film turned up a notch. It’s ridiculous but clever fun. Watch it and have a blast.
City of Lost Children (Erriy, Beautiful, truly innovative) *** Fantasy
From the director of Amelie comes a work of fantasy-almost too unusual to adaquately explain. As per usual with this director the characters are all quirky and fascinating. The story is radically different and entertaining. Be prepared to be perplexed and overwrought by oddity in an entirely fictitious world. This is a very complex film. Just relax, enjoy and appreciate the hard work put into this film.!
Clock Watchers (Office Space but darker) *** Black Comedy
A very good movie about the absurdity of the nine to five work day. This film like Office Space pokes fun of the ridiculousness of minutia, yet shows a deeper and more realistic portrayal of the toll our society takes on the individual. Parker Posie, Toni Collette, and Phoebe from friends star.
Dark City (Love the Matrix, like Dark City) *** Sci/Fi Fantasy
This movie which predates the Matrix by several years is surprisingly similar in many of the fundamental concepts. (i.e. something is going on in the world and it’s up to one individual to figure it out and save the masses) The budget isn’t nearly as monumental as the Matrix but the special effects-most of which were done without the aid of computers- is spectacular. The plot is very interesting and keeps you guessing as to how it will unfold. Basically, a clever and entertaining movie. (Co-starring Jennifer Connely)
Dead Again (Marvelous Suspense/Mystery) *** Thriller
A good suspense film. Once again issues of being a tad but dated but a wonderful film none the less. Kenneth Brannah and then wife Emma Thompson are both terrific in this very fun and clever film. Great for a lazy and cloudy night.
Dead Poet Society: (Beautiful) ***** Drama
The coming of age story of all coming of age stories. Beautifully filmed. The shear beauty of youth’s vitality and endless desire for betterment has never been better captured in my opinion. Truly inspiring. Carpe Dieum Everyone should see this movie and love it.
Edward Scissor Hands (Odd and loving it) **** Fantasy
Most definitely one of Tim Burton’s best films. Pure cinematic genius. Between the huge topiary, the church lady with the casio-esque organ, and Wynona Ryder’s on screen mom- you will adore this quirky but beautiful film. Its a dark comedy?? Perhaps an odd drama?? Whatever you want to call it - its exceedingly entertaining. The performances are spectacular (Vincent Price even makes an appearance) and the social commentary on suburbia is on the mark. Forget about American Beauty-see this instead.
Emma (A very good adatationn of Austen’s classic) *** Drama
Starring Gweneth Palrtow and Jeremy Northam, this remake of the classic book by Jane Austen faithfully recaptures the charm of Emma’s character as well as her innocent folleys. Toni Collette plays Emma’s close and simple friend brilliantly. This is a great film to rent if one is in the mood for a light and comedic romance.
Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind (One of my favorite movies: in theatres March 2004/Jim Carey's most moving and best performances) ***** Drama
This very quirky movie about a guy (Jim Carey) who decides to have some of memory erased in order to get over a bad relationship. What he gets is an experience he would never had expected. Co-starring the delightful Kate Winslet, Elijah Wood. Marvelous and haunting in a very romantic sort of way.
Fargo (Frick’n good dontcha know?) ***** Drama-edy
Set in present day wintery MINEESODA, this is a crime caper to end all crime capers, right Margee? "Oh yaah." This is one intense movie, and not shy on the gore. But this is shear movie genius. This is undoubtedly one of the Cohen Bros. (Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski) best movies ever. Between the dialogue, characters, music, scenery and cinematography you will be taken away. You will leave the movie feeling odd-but recognizing the intelligence and art behind the film. A must see.
Fight Club (Dirty,Raw, KICK ARSE Awesome) ***** Drama
Wicked fun. You are caught off guard throughout the film due to its truth and abrasiveness. The movie gives you a multitude of things to take away with you-andis full of commentary on current society in America. The cool factor due to Brad Pitt and the Dust Bros. soundtrack make this a mass-media cult classic. For most men its in their top 10- if not top 5- it is simply great. Meaningful and cool- what better combo is there?
Finding Nemo (Cute and Hilarious) *** Animated Children's Movie
This Pixar film is radical in the sense that it appeals completely to both adults and children. Its wit is bountiful thanks in large part to Ellen Degeneres who plays a fish with a short term memory problem- who helps Nemo’s dad find the missing Nemo. One cannot explain the charm of the movie but it should be seen if not for the spectacular art which is entirely rendered by computers.
Frida (An excellent film) *** Drama
This is a wonderful portrayal of Mexican artist Frida Khalo. The unique intergration of Khalo’s work into the storyline of the film is very creatively done. Its is beautifully filmed and the general look of the film gives flavor to the story. My only complaint is with the casting director’s insistence upon using famous American and British actors to play the parts of major Mexican and characters. (Robin Kolchord from Cheers as Frida’s father? Naomi Judd as her Mexican friend?) This at times becomes a distraction which would not have been a concern had unknown actors been used. (Geoffry Rush as Leon Trostkii? Please!) Overall very interesting and enjoyable.
Gattaca (Very enjoyable) *** Sci/Fi
This small film is well put together and entertaining. The story is fresh and creative, reminding one of a good short story. It isn’t a very deep movie-but then again it doesn’t have to be in order to be a good movie. It’s light enough to watch when you’re not sure what type of movie and it should fit the bill.
Ghostbusters (Admit it you like it!) *** Comedy
This 80’s hit still holds it own when compared to most movies in its class. The film’s strength is in the comedy of Bill Murray, Rick Moranis and Dan Akroyd. Pre computerized special effects are fun and inventive. All around a fun movie.
Goodwill Hunting (Well developed and emotive) *** Drama
This is the big screen debut of Matt Damon who co-wrote this film with fellow costar Ben Affleck. The film is about a young man who is born into poverty but with the mind of a genius only to be recognized by a professor at the local university where Damon works as a janitor. Also starring Robin Williams as a scarred therapist who attempts to aid Damon in coming to terms with the discordant choices he has to make concerning the path his life will take. Wonderfully acted and well written. An excellent film.
Groundhog Day (Billy Murray is so FUNNY!) *** Comedy
Bill Murray’s classic film about what happens to a man who has to relive the same day over and over and over again. Co Starring Andie McDoweel. It’s original, clever and surprisingly refreshing. A fabulous rental!
Hideous Kinky (Not a Porno!! A movie which makes one realize the comforts of home) **** Drama
Kate Winslet in one of her finest performances, along with two amazing child actresses find their way through 1970’s Marrakesh. Its a story about home- family and finding oneself in the midst of a confusing world. Its a beautifully filmed movie-the scenes are breathtaking. You care for these characters and find yourself empathizing with them in a land which at first seems so foreign and distant. An enjoyable and different kind of movie.
In the Bedroom (Not worth the hype) ** Drama
This movie too was waayyyy over rated. Like "The Deep End" it has an odd feel to the first part of the movie- a pseudo real anti typical movie feel, which isn’t necessarily good nor bad. Then towards the end it become ridiculous and way too out of character from the rest of the movie. For those who thought they liked it or who wanted to see it- watch ordinary people- its a much more realistic portrayal of how people deal with loss.
Jerusalem (RARE-but definitely worth the search) **** Drama
This is a film of a group of Scandianvians at the turn of the century who make a permanent pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Igmar Bergman carefully crafts this enthralling story of pilgrims, foreigners, and religious fanatics who risk their lives for a cause they believe in. By the end you will truly empathize for these individuals and their self inflicted asylum. Beautiful cinematography truly adds to the story. I was fortunate to see this at the Vogue theatre and have never run acrosst it at any video store- if you do find it rent it straight away. (In various languages-with English subtitles)
Jurassic Park (Welcome to the new world: of computer generated stuff) *** Action
This film finally shows off what computer technology can do. The script, while very Hollywood, is none the less entertaining and keeps your attention to the very end. The point about progress and its short comings is apparent and well made. Jeff Goldbloom steals the show. Meant for the big screen it loses some in translation to the TV screen. See it and be impressed. For heavens sake see it- it’s Steven Spielberg’s last good movie.
Legally Blonde I or II (Funny and Pink) *** Comedy
These movies are too much fun. Reese Whitherspoon is so cute and charming in this role you can’t help but love her. Oddly inspiring these movies have a lot to say about self esteem and the power of one to make a difference in the world. Simply hilarious! If you want to smile see them.
Lelo and Stitch (Unusual and fun) *** Animated Children's Movie
This Disney film is both beautiful and fun. Adults will enjoy this film just about as much if not more than kids. An odd premise about a Hawaiian girl who adopts a space alien- who is being watched by another cross dressing alien, makes for a great film. See it and have fun.
Lost In Translation (Film’s charm lies in unique script and beautiful acting) *** Drama-edy
This film set in Japan revolves around two married individuals. They both stay in the same hotel, where they happen to meet. Bill Murray plays an aging James Bond-esque actor who is in Japan for a photo shoot, he meets a young woman whose newlywed husband has brought her with him to Japan where he is busy photographing a rock band. The two suffering from insomnia happen to meet each other in the hotel lounge. The friendship they develop is beautiful. This film is nothing earth shattering but it is so well acted and original it is a lot of fun to see, and leaves you thinking about how we define and create relationships.
Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Too Hollywood, but still very good) *** Fantasy
This trilogy is as exciting as it is long. The special effects are incredible. The immense scope of this project is truly impressive. Given the limitations of the big screen many details from the original books are lost which causes those unfamilar with the books difficulty in identifying with the characters. I have my complaints about the films (Do they have to be 40 hours long???) but overall I truly enjoyed seeing them and think most people would as well
Malice (Great Suspense) *** Thriller
There are not enough good suspence movies out there-this is the exception. It is a little dated (late 80’s early 90’s) but the storyline holds up. So many curves that you’ll never see coming at you. Plus Bebe Neurworth (aka Lilith from Cheer) is in it, what more could you ask for? If you want to be in suspense- watch it.
Manchurian Candidate (One of the original suspense films- excellent) **** Thriller
Dealing with international intrigue and presidential consipiracies this film was yanked from its original releaed in1963 due to the assasination of President John F. Kennedy due to the subject matter.theatres when it was originally released. This film showcases Angela Lansbury’s acting genius. Its a perplexing mystery until the end- and excellent rental.
Meet Joe Black (Long film & One of the most romantic movies of all time) **** Drama
In this very smart film, Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins give some of their best performances. Yes its big budget Hollywood-but look beyond it- yes its sugary as hell at times- but there is a truth to be found here. Its truly a very romantic movie so beware you romantics at heart-this will pull on your heartstrings. Its a great one for a nice quiet evening at home.
Memento (So clever it will take you days to sort it all out) **** Thriller
This very well written movie works backwards. You therefore see the final scene of the movie in the first and you follow the story backwards into time. Its a fascinating concept and it is pulled off seamlessly. A great mystery which leaves you thoughful and satisfied. Rent this film!!
Metropolis (Wonderful Japanese Animated film) *** Anime
Spectacular animated recreation of the futuristic 1928 American film of the same name. The stylistic art is amazing and lends a lot to the already interesting story. If you enjoy Japanamation-this is top notch-if you enjoy an aesthectically beautiful film-rent this one.
Miller’s Crossing (It has one of the most intense scenes ever captured on film) **** Drama
While this film is not as well known as their other films (Fargo, The Big Lebowski, Rasing Arizona) it is decidedly just as well crafted as its movie bretheren. The film which focuses on the Irish mob is absolutely engrossing. Nick Toturo’s performance in this film will forever win him a place in your movie critic’s heart as one of the best actors of our time.
Minority Report (Over the top, and not in a good way) * Drama
Once again Steven Spielberg is involved with another poor movie. Tom Cruise tries to pull off his weak police detective character but the script is so bad and uninteresting that he cannot save it. This movie has very little going for it-it mimicks a much better film (The Fugitive starring Harrison Ford) so save yourself the hassell and see the Fugitive again.
Moonstruck (Endearing and simply lovely) **** Drama-edy This film starring Cher, Nicholas Cage and Olympia Dukakis is simply a joy. Romantic, silly all the while melting your heart. It’s a story about love and all that goes along with it. The script is marvelous, with witty banter and terrific Italian American arguments. An all around classic.
Moulin Rouge (The Muscial for the 21st Century) *** Musical
Be prepared for a sight and sound extravaganza your senses have never experienced. Truly if you can make it past the first cancan scene then your sense may make it through the whole movie. In typcial Baz Lurhman style the colors, flashes, dancing, costumes are all to the 200th percent in every sense-style,color, size etc. Ewan McGregor is a surprisingly good singer and his version of Elton John’s "How wonderful life is..." song is amazing!Nothing can prepare you for the shear joy of Spectacular Spectacular. Throw in a redo of Maddona’s like a virgin, Sting’s Roxanne and the theme from the Sound of Music and you’ll have yourself one humdinger of a good time.
Mystery Men (It takes a great witt to appreciate this film-do you have what it takes??) **** Comedy Between Janeen Garoffalo, Ben Stiller and the Shoveler-you can’t go wrong. When the Blue Raja forks the evil Cassanova Frankenstein’s camaro limo- you will know that you like this movie. When the baby bowler tells the spleen that "there isn’t enough beer on earth" you will know that you really like this movie. But when Mr Furious almost pops a stress ball-and his boss still tells him to "scrap it" you know finally- that you love this film. Its so clever one could miss a lot of the humor, so stick in there!
Night Mother (Devastatingly beautiful) ***** Drama
Anne Bancroft anmd Sissey Spacek play mother and daughter in this adaptation of the Broadway hit. The entire play occurs within the Mother’s home. It tackles very deep and true family and personal issues in a very powerful and memorable way. A shocking and moving film everyone should see.
Office Space (Corporate America at its funniest) *** Comedy
This film hits the bullseye with its deadpan portrayal of corporate America. Due to the originality of characters and plotline the film is both fresh and hilarious. Reminiscent of Dilbert, this comedy hurts due to the fact that it hits too true to the bone. A wonderful nights rental.
Ordinary People (Brilliant!) ***** Drama
This film-about family dynamics is utterly disturbing in its accuracy. Timothy Hutton is the young teenage son of Donald Sutherland (who plays a perfect aloof father) and Mary Tyler Moore (who you will never look at the same after seeing her in this performance). Though made in the 1970’s its surprising less dated than most 80’s movies and still holds up with today’s audiences. Be prepared for heavy issues here, but truly a must see.
Persuasion (1995) (The BBC and Jane Austen at their best) ***** Drama/Period Piece
This production - which is hands down the best version of any Jane Austen book Ive ever seen is a marvel. The sets, costumes, scenery all fit perfectly into this world of 18th century England. The actors are some of the best in all of England. Amanda Root’s performance as the eldest of the Elliot sisters is subdued excellence. The story is a classic romance which transcends the time period. Its a simply a beautiful film.
Places in the Heart (Amazing performances) **** Drama
This is a rather slow moving film so beware. Yet the peformances are top notch all the way. Sally Field is perfect as the determined and independent farm owner who must find a way of keeping all that remains after misfortune befalls her. Danny Glover is wonderful. Even the usually creepy John Malkovitch is terrific in this film set in the 1930’s dust bowl mid-west. It is a simple and solid film you will find yourself enjoying thoroughly.
Poetry (Beautiful, touchingly sad Korean film) **** Drama
This Korean film is beautiful, sad and a great work of art. The performance by Yoon Jeong-hee as a Grandmother trying to raise a troubled teenager is so touching and real that it makes this film a must seen. There are a couple of scene inappropriate for younger views and may make adult squirm uncomfortably, but it is a small price to pay in order to see a film of this calibre.
Punch Drunk Love (You’ll forget the title but will remember the film) **** Drama-edy
Actually you probably will not appreciate this film. Few people surprisingly do. Adam Sandler in one of his rare serious roles plays an eccentric single business man who distributes clear plastic plungers who is so painfully shy and introverted that he never meets single women. A point which all of his sisters (seven of them) make note of frequently. He then meets a friend of one of his sisters and an odd chemistry develops. Quirky and unusal- with a feel of a Cohen Brothers movie (Fargo, The Big Lebowski, Raising Arizona). It is refreshing and invigorating- if you don’t like it you should, and shame on you.
Raising Arizona (See it and Laugh a bunch) *** Comedy
A brilliant comedy. One of the cohen brother’s first films. Involving a goofey odd ball duo who get themselves into a mess of trouble. Holly Hunter is so good in this film you will love her forever. Even the usually dodgy Nicholas Cage is great in this off-the-wall movie. It is absolute in its hilarity. If you want to laugh see this film. The end.
Requiem for a Dream (Astonishing) ***** Drama
The most beautiful film about addictions I have ever seen. Jared Leto and Mr Wayens are great- but Ellen Byrsten is so magnificent that she is one of my all time favorites because of her portrayal of Mrs Goldfarb. An absolutely killer performance! See it! - be scared as well as emotionally scarred -appreciate the cinematic genius of it all!
Royal Tannenbaums (Quirky, Lovely, hilariously sad) ***** Drama-edy This film captures the feel of what one invisions a great work of literature to be like- so verbose that its hilarious. Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson are genius at capturing the oddity of a character and making them so adorable you’d adopt a 50 year old butler named Pagoda (as long as he promised never to stab you with a fingernail file). You cannot escape the charm of this film, it follows you everywhere- as does a pervasive saddness you wont be able to shake for days. You will be haunted by the song sung in "quarter time" by Nikko from the Velvet Underground and the late Elliot Smith’s "suicide" song. You will want the soundtrack and you will thank yourself when you do. The movie is a masterpiece -see it!!!
Rushmore (Oh so sad-yet oh so hilarious) **** Comedy
This is the second in the Anderson/Wilson films. Much darker than their first yet just as funny and quirky. Bill Murray is a comedic genius-when he lights up the second cigarette-while already smoking another-unbeknownst to his depressed self- you will fall out of your chair in utter despair and unbounding laughter. Truly- such a unique movie one cannot describe it- other than its a quest for love, and the resulting aftermath when one realizes that its not all its cracked up to be.
Russian Ark (Unique, Intriguging) **** Drama
From the moment this film starts (which is the longest film ever in one take and one continuous shot) you are perplexed, confused and a little weary of exactly what is happening. As the film progresses you start feeling your way about and getting your feet as to how and why this film is unfolding as it is. Filmed entirely in the Hermitage museum in Russia you are transported to a different time and place- into a world with a decidedly Russian viewpoint. A must for Russophiles and anyone who enjoys history. (In Russian with English Subtitles)
Schindler’s List (Holocaust film) ***** Drama
One of Steven Speilberg’s best films. This truly haunting film captures the true horror of the hallocaust. Amazing performances. This is a film everyone should see at least once in their lifetime. Shakespeare in Love (Romance is still alive) *** This film starring Gweneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes is a pure joy to watch. Full of Shakespearian twists and turns. This light romance is hard not to love. You will be swept away by the wooing young Shakespeare (Fiennes) as he writes his plays due to his inspirational encounters with his Juliette (Paltrow) Dane Judy Dench (Who plays Queen Elizabeth I) is marvelous as usual. A wonderful night’s rental.
Shang-Hi Triad (Chinese Elegance) *** Foreign Film / Drama
This foreign film is a true cinematic delight. The cinematography is worth the rental price alone. Set in the 1930's the story revolves around a beautiful singer and the equivalent to the Chinese mafia. The acting is impecable. Slow, foreign, wonderful.
Sneakers (A light spy film which is heavy on character development) **** Thriller
This film starring Robert Redford, Dan Akroyd and Sidney Poitier is cut from a very special cloth. Ordinarily a movie about a rag tag team of misfits who play spy in their spare time would get no more than one star but due to the extensive character development and smart writing this movie is a real treat for viewers. Full of localized intrigue. This is a fun movie to watch.
Spellbound (Yes it’s a documentary about spelling B’s. But it is great! Don’t miss out!) *** Documentary
From the moment you are introduced to the mother of one of the 8 kids the documentary follows (on their way to the national spelling B) who explains that she has various items in her house- such as magnets, needle point etc. which have the slogan "Bee have" or "Bee happy" you will cry. You will cry because this woman is the funniest woman you will ever (in your whole entire life) see on the big screen. When her dog licks her leg during the interview and she is completely oblivious to this fact you might have a heart attack- so be prepared. See it!!
Spirited Away (Alice in Wonderland of Today-Japanese Style) **** Anime
This Japanese Animated film is spectacular. It is sooo very odd and enjoyable. The plot takes you all over the place and you thoroughly enjoy the ride. When you see the adorable little coal dust creatures walking about you will be hooked. The viewer is completely taken into this imaginary world one hates to see end.
Star Wars Trilogy (Science Fiction will never get any better than this) ***** Sci/Fi
This is it. The original movies which inspired every forth coming space movie. Even its prequels cant hold a match to these spectacular films. Yes the dialogue is cheesey, but the special effects are revolutionary. The actor dynamics between Harrison Ford, Carrie Fischer are incredible. Throw in Chew-Bacca, Yoda, and R2-D2 and you have yourself the best space movies evermade.
The Dark Crystal (Henson at his best) **** Fantasy
This unique film shows Henson’s puppet mastery combined with a very dark storyline. The characters are altogether fascinating and pieces of art in their own right. This film isn’t just for kids as one might imagine- and in fact can be very intense at moments. Its a film whose images can stay with one forever- If you have ever heard the shrill voice of one of the bird people you will know what I mean.
The Fugitive (Classic thriller)*** Thriller
This is a classic action/suspense movie. Harrison Ford gives this film class as well as respectability which it would otherwise lack. The script is very solid and Tommy Lee Jones adds a needed sense of humor to this otherwise extremely intense thriller. Its not earth shattering but it is great fun.
The Game (Keeps you guessing/Great Fun) *** Thriller
This gem of a suspense film is wonderfully surprising. Michael Doughlas does a marvelous performance of a wealthy businessman who finds himself caught up in a world of deciet and treachery. Truly entertaining and fairly fasted paced you’ll find yourself glued to this one until the bitter end. Great fun.
The Gladiator (Kill Kill Kill-starring the new Mel Gibson aka Russell Crowe) ** Action
Give me a break. Contrary to popular belief this is not a great film. It is at times mildly-mildly entertaining- but I thought that if Russel Crowe would kill one more Gaul, just one more, I thought I’d throw a brick through the screen (I was carrying one just in case) You can rent this if: You like blood and guts: You like obvious plot lines; Russel Crowe doesn’t make you vomit. Tip to the wise any movie made since 1995 staring: Mel Gibson, Kevin Spacey, Kevin Costner, Russel Crowe should not be watched. These are Hollywood actors apparently unable to make a good film.
The Godfather (Part I and II-what every other Mob movie wishes it could be) ***** Drama
These films are classics- because they have truly defined what with think of the mafioso in this country. The acting, story, costumes are top notch. If you haven’t seen these films you are missing out of a huge piece of American films. Rent them today- call in sick to work or simply quit- see them!
The Lady Killer's (Um, what happened to the Cohen brothers?) ** Comedy
I do not understand it- what has happened to so many of the good directors recently. Between Steven Speilberg, Tim Burton and now the Cohen Brothers I am unsure what the world has come to. From the directors of Fargo, Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing and the Big Lebowski they dynamic brother duo have made another so so, humdrum movie
The Last Unicorn (Great Animation, plus music by AMERICA need I say more?) *** Fantasy
Yes its true the 80’s band AMERICA performs the songs on this classic animated cartoon of a solitary unicorn whose quest to find the other remaining unicorns develops into a full blown adventure. With the voice talents of Mia Farrow, Jeff Bridges and Angela Lansbury. The movie is haunting and almost seems more appropriate for adults than for small children. (Those who are anti Angela Lansbury will appreciate the fact that her character is killed by a three breasted harpee- Although I love Lansbury and therefore was appauled) This is NOT a Disney movie- which is one of its strongest points- the style of animation is very unique and expressive. A sad but truly enjoyable film.
The Matrix (See it!! BUT, ONLY PART ONE !!!) **** Sci/Fi Fantasy
Action is finally brought to the next level. This film has plot, grace and is simply: "Smooth". Simply forget that this is a trilogy otherwise you risk ruining your high opinion of the first movie. Yes Keanu Reeves is in it- but get over it-his lines are minimal and you get so caught up in the story you’ll completely miss when he says "dude" after every sentence. This film is revolutionary in many senses. See it. Respect it. See it three times if you are tempted to see the sequels.
The Music Man (One of the all time Musical Classics) **** Musical
This 1960’s musical cannot be beat for its catchy tunes- and perfectly timed humor. The Mayor’s wife Eulelie Macekney Schinn is so wonderful you will wish she had her own movie. You even get to see little Ron Howard sing his red headed heart out. Hold’s up extremely well even though its nearly 40 years old.
The Never Ending Story (A fabulous children’s movie) *** Children's Movie Fantasy
This movie is perfect for children 8 and up. Its rather unusual story line along with its stunning visuals pulls in viewers into a world full of fascinating creatures and mysteries. While decidedly a kid’s movie adults should find it appealing too. Made in the 80’s it still should be relatively eay to find.

The Odd Couple (Mathau and Lemon at their best) **** Comedy
This 1960’s classic about two bachelors who move in together and find out just how difficult it can be to live with someone else. This comedy has superb acting and the script is absolutely hilarious. There are few if any location changes, it reminds the audience that you don’t need a lot of special effects to have a great film.
The Others (Classic, Suspence at its best) **** Suspense
This film is sooooo good. Thedirector wrote the screen play and composed and conducted the music- the result is a film which keeps you on the edge of your seat. The is actually a storyline here! Yes its true!! It’s very frightening at times- but in a totally non- gorey sort of way. Its all done in a very clever and true hitchcock-esque manner. If you dont Nicole Kidmann now- you will after seeing the film. :) See it- be scared.
The Patriot (If you’ve seen one movie with Mel Gibson you HAVE seen them all) *
This is Lethal Weapon 1776. Give us all a break. My friends left with tear stains on their shirts. I left with tears in my eyes for having to watch this ridiculous movie. When the "mute" daughter finally says "Papa" I about had it. "Okay, we’ve killed off all of his sons now, who else can we kill to make the audience feel even more sorry for Mel?" Hang it up- do not rent this movie!! Please spare yourself and your children/future children/next door neighbor’s children/or any child you may ever encounter.
The Pianist (Powerful beyond words) **** Drama
This film is as beautiful (in the sense of truth) as it is utterly disturbing and horrifying. The film which follows a Jewish man through the trials and tribulations of living under the rule of Adolf Hitler. Watching the atrocities on screen the viewer is actually scarred and finds themselves totally affected by the loss and shear barbaric brutality inflicted upon the Jewish people. A film that should be seen- but be prepared (as if one ever could). Maginificent performances.
The Shower (Heartfelt) **** Foreign Drama
This wonderful Chinese film is about family responsibilities and the benefits and drawbacks of modernization. This inside look at semi-rural Chinese life exceedingly interesting. The characters are so well written and performed that you can’t helped than to be charmed by this film. Surprisingly readily available in many rental stores. Watch and enjoy.
The Sound of Music (Classic Musical) **** Musical
This film with its legendary songs will be one of the top musicals ever. Due in large part to Julie Andrew’s wonderful portrayal of Maria von Trapp (aka Fraulein Maria). Impossible to resist the movie takes over and you are caught in a Disney-esque wonderland. Certainly dated it somehow still remains as popular as ever. A great family movie.

The Triplets of Bellville (A Marvelous French Cartoon) **** Animated
This is a very inventive and original cartoon about a Grand Mother of a Tour de France bicyclist who has been kidnapped by the French mob. She and her trusty dog with the help of the now aged famous singing trio "The Triplets of Belleville" go on a crusade to rescue him. In French with English subtitles- though most of the movie is speechless and has a few songs, mostly in English. Odd but very enjoyable- More for adults than for kids but nothing to offend.
Titanic (Exceedingly realistic special effects) *** Drama
The advances in computer technology shine with this rendition of the horrible and true event of the sinking of the Titanic ocean liner. The romantic storyline of Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio is decidedly weak but the film is still very entertaining. Obviously made for the mass audiences, yet one cannot help but enjoy it. It definitely looses a lot in the transition to the small screen. If ever rereleased in the theatre make sure to see it.
Tootsie (One of the funniest Movies ever) **** Comedy
Certainly one of Dustin Hoffman’s best roles. The comedic genius of Dabney Coleman, Bill Murray and Terri Garr shine in this film. Jessica Lange is endearing as Hoffman’s love interest. If you haven’t seen this movie you must go out and get it right this second! GO! GO! I mean NOW!!
Transformers The Movie (If you’re a fan of the 80’s tv series you should own this movie) **
Only fans of the tv show, kids or fans of Japanamation should see this film. All of your Autobot and Decepticon favorites are here. (Starscream fans unite! Starscream for President 2004) With the voice talents of Orson Wells, Lenard Nemoy and Casey Kasem. A true blast from the past for kids of the 80’s!
Twelve Monkey’s (Marvelous thriller) *** Thriller
This film starring Bruce Willis is a great suspence/thriller movie. Keeping you guessing the entire way through the plot is both complex and intriguging. This Terry Gilliam (Brazil) work is very solid and enjoyable. Rent it! (Co-starring Brad Pitt)
Waking Life (Breathtaking, Revolutionary, true art) **** Animated-NOT FOR CHILDREN
This film is truly revolutionary. It was digitally filmed and then artists using a computer program designed for the movie painted over top the film-creating an unusually stunning affect. One could sit for hours watching a scene unfold. Marvelous. Many artists were used throughout the film so the styles change constanly from scene to scene. The dialogue is so heavy and theorethical that the audience would never be able to make it all the way through had it not been for the visuals which carry you through. The film actually makes some very keen observations about reality. See it- be amazed.
What Dreams May Come (Visually innovative- yet story lags behind) ** Drama
This film is an asthetic marvel. The scene in which Robin Williams is walking through a world constructed of paint is simply amazing. His very serious portrayal of a husband/father who loses his wife and two children in a car accident is impressive, yet the story line is all too depressing and morose and doesn’t lend itself to be either entertaining or poinient. You leave thinking it was "okay" but never wishing to see it again.
Zoolander (Hilarious frivolity) *** Comedy
Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Will Ferrel. Need I say more?? This movie is funny. It can be down right stupid but even then it is funny. Given that Ben Stiller is involved be prepared for a peppering of witty moments. Not to be taken seriously. If you’re looking for a movie you can laugh at without any strings this is the one. Rent it.
